The Alliance for Positive Thought - About

Studies show that religious people are happier than the rest of the population. Why? Because religions, in general, are institutions that are devoted to disciplined positive thought, and that provide the support of a community with shared views.

But you should not have to believe ridiculous old legends in order to get these benefits. Happiness is something we all want, but some of us just cannot bring ourselves to swallow fables in order to get there. But now there is an alternative: happiness without mumbo-jumbo: The Alliance for Positive Thought.

By now, it is an established psychological fact that thoughts lead to emotions. Scientists have discovered cognitive-behavioral therapy to work at least as well as medication in treating depression. But you don't have to be depressed to realize that you can harness these scientific principles for your own betterment. Religion works because it makes use of the biological and psychological factors we are beginning to understand. Scientists have finally verified what medicine men and priests have known for centuries: contained within the brain is the secret of happiness. The Alliance for Positive Thought strives to deliver this joy to its members through time-tested methods of positive thinking including methods inspired by prayer, meditation, cognitive-behavioral therapy and music therapy.

The Alliance for Positive Thought is a home for all nonbelievers. We are a group of people who believe that the traditional God does not exist. We are devoted to helping our members find the meaning and happiness they seek. APT is all-inclusive: we welcome everyone from every tradition, background, race, gender, or ethnic group. But we believe that in order for a secular alternative to religion to work, it must establish some fundamental metaphysical and ethical positions. "Nonbeliever" is a negative description, that by itself is not enough to hold a group of like-minded individuals together. We believe in certain foundational scientific principles, about which we are not afraid to take a stand.

We believe that we live in universe controlled by physics. We believe that humans evolved, and therefore that humans are part of a great web of life that is no more or less sacred than humans themselves. We believe that life is valuable. From these foundational principles, we believe we can derive ethical standards, and attach meaning and structure to our lives. But since we are an organization founded on scientific principles, rather than theistic dogma, our debate about the details of these standards is neverending. But just knowing that we share these basic principles, and are willing to defend them, means that we have certain strong opinions.
